As of this writing I am more than halfway through the films and television series starring Christina Ricci. I wanted to take a brief moment to reflect on why I chose her as the subject matter of this blog as well as mention something I got to do recently.
I chose Miss Ricci for the subject here because I wanted to focus on an actor/actress who was still working as of the beginning of the blog. That way I could add new films as I go into the mix. I was hoping to catch new releases as they hit theaters but thus far that hasn’t happened, although I don’t count it out just yet (she does, after all, have several films in various stages of development right now). I narrowed on Christina because when I was younger I was fascinated by her, especially as Wednesday Addams, a role she played when I was in high school. I’ve seen her in several things since then but fell away for a while as life got in the way. Now was the time for me to catch up.
About two weeks ago I got a notification that she was going to be attending Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. This was short notice to me but I couldn’t miss the opportunity to actually meet her, not when I was dedication many hundreds of hours to her filmography. I booked tickets, bought a photo-op and an autograph and, since I could only afford one day off for this event, drove ten hours round trip to spend the day in Seattle and meet her.
Then her flight was delayed and I almost missed the only reason I was there. Fortunately she arrived and, two hours late, I got to meet her in person. It was worth the wait. She was as nice as could be expected and i got to geek out for a couple of minutes, well worth the long drive to me. In the end, I spent a lot of time and money but I got to see her in person and interact with her, if only for a few minutes. For a souvenir I have an autographed picture from Addams Family Values and a picture standing side by side with a woman whose career I am just getting to know extensively. I look like I’m in over my head in the pic thanks to the camera man snapping it before I could get a smile on my face but I don’t care. I love this picture and it’s the perfect item to add to my life at this point in my writings. Some would say the ten hours driving in the winter, especially over Snoqualmie Pass during a time of year when snow chains are required by law, is not worth it for a couple of minutes with a celebrity. I’ll argue it was worth it. Being able to talk with, and have physical contact with, a celebrity, especially one I’ve known and watched for more than half my life, brings a level of reality to that person as a person that would otherwise not be there. Plus it gave me an insight into what type of a person she really is. As she posed for pictures her default pose was to reach out and offer a half-hug to each of us. She could have just stood there or sat in a chair like some of the celebs did but she wanted to connect with us fans. It was a fun experience and something I will remember for the rest of my life.
